Unlike the low temperature outside, Baosteel's rare earth steel plate plant fully opened its "hot" power, and the hot charging rate of continuous casting billets reached a historical high of 86%. At the same time, it achieved an impressive result of reducing the cost of steel by 1.55 yuan per ton.
Entering the slab warehouse of Baosteel Rare Earth Steel Plate Plant's continuous casting operation department, one can see from a distance that waves of heat are rising above the neatly stacked billets. The clamp opens its "big hand" to grab a billet and place it steadily on the heating furnace roller conveyor. Subsequently, the furnace door slowly opened, and the rollers rotated to send the cast billet into the fiery red furnace... "When the cast billet with a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius is loaded into the heating furnace, the temperature is still above 500 degrees Celsius. This way, it can be reheated while it is still hot, which can also reduce production costs!" Zhang Lele, the regional technical organizer of the continuous casting operation department, introduced the changes before and after the factory started technological research at the beginning of this year.
Continuous casting billet hot charging, as an intensive and efficient production mode integrating steelmaking, continuous casting, and hot rolling, is based on improving equipment accuracy and stabilizing billet quality. By optimizing production, it can further shorten the storage and furnace time of slabs, achieve the goals of energy conservation, cost reduction, and efficiency improvement. Since the beginning of this year, Baosteel Rare Earth Steel Plate Plant has actively implemented the accounting management concept, and has taken improving the hot charging rate of continuous casting billets as an important task to tackle. In February, the hot charging rate exceeded the planned target, effectively reducing the fuel consumption and burning loss of the hot rolling heating furnace and improving production efficiency. In the past, most of the cast billets in the factory needed to be stored in the warehouse area for several hours, and could only be loaded into the heating furnace after passing the surface quality inspection after cooling; Nowadays, 86% of the incoming castings have a temperature above 500 degrees Celsius, and some steel grades of castings do not even need to be stored for direct installation.
Ensuring the quality of castings is a prerequisite for improving the hot charging rate. According to frontline staff of the factory, Baosteel Rare Earth Steel Plate Plant starts with the quality of molten steel and formulates inspection standards and inspection cycles for key equipment such as casting machines, crystallizers, and sector sections to ensure equipment accuracy; On the other hand, do a good job in protecting the pouring iron to avoid secondary oxidation of molten steel. At the same time, it also strictly implements standardized operations, stabilizes process control, significantly reduces the defect rate of castings, and achieves the best historical level of initial inspection qualification rate.
The heating time of the slab in the furnace has been shortened by 15.81% compared to before the research and development. With shorter heating time, gas consumption naturally decreases, "said Du Xiong, the quality professional technical supervisor of the hot rolling operation department of the factory. The optimization of the slab heating system, the reduction of the slab discharge temperature, the optimization of the roughing rolling mode, and the increase of the final rolling temperature in the hot rolling process further shorten the time of the slab in the furnace, with the aim of achieving ultimate cost reduction.
The precise control of key indicators such as slab release rate, discharge rate, and steel loading rate is also very important, "Du Xiong said."
